Lyme Bay is an area at the western end of the English Channel situated in the southwest of Great Britain extending from the west at Torbay to Portland in the east. The scenic counties of Devon and Dorset front onto the bay, notable towns including Seaton, Sidmouth, Lyme Regis, Budleigh Salterton and Beer. The area around Lyme Bay is part of a World Heritage Site, the Jurassic Coast, so named for its Jurassic geology. The Jurassic Coast stretches over a distance of 153 kilometres (95 mi), from Orcombe Point near Exmouth, in the west, to Old Harry Rocks in the east. As tidal action has exposed the coastline a continuous sequence of Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous rock formations spanning approximately 185 million years of the Earths history are visible. The localities along the Jurassic Coast includes a large range of important fossil zones. Lyme Bay has been referred to as The Bay of a Thousand Wrecks, and has been a well known safe haven through the ages for ships sheltering from storms. Some of the most well known wrecks include the M2, Salsette, The Empress of India, HMS Landrail and the Baygitano. For those with a keen interest in Diving there are also scallop grounds, reefs, ledges and the Impressive Sunset Corals to explore. Reef and wreck diving charters are available from Lyme Regis. The South West Coast Path is an excellent walk following (where practical) the contours of the coast from Studland in East Dorset, along the Lyme Bay coast lines of West Dorset and East Devon, along the South Devon coast, around the Cornish coast and back through North Devon to Minehead in Somerset.
